Terms
The agreement between you and Ryan Beach, which runs Opie. Using Opie means you accept it.
Last updated 5 August 2026.
Opie is not medical advice, and this is the important part
Opie cannot tell you whether something is safe for you to eat. It reads labels, matches ingredients against a list, and keeps a record of what you told it. That is useful, and it is not a diagnosis, a clinical judgement, or a substitute for your doctor.
Specifically:
- Labels are wrong sometimes. Manufacturers reformulate, packaging lags behind, and shared production lines are not always declared. A clean result in Opie does not mean a clean product.
- Reading a photo is imperfect. Text can be misread, cut off, or missed entirely, especially on a curved or creased package.
- Our ingredient list is a starting point. It is curated by people, it is incomplete, and reasonable experts disagree about some entries.
- Community entries are unverified. Products submitted by other members are marked as such, and nobody has checked them.
Always read the label yourself. Decisions about what you eat, and any treatment, belong to you and your care team. If you are having a reaction, seek medical help. Do not open this app instead.
Your account
You need an account, you need to be 13 or older, and the details you give should be accurate. Keep your password to yourself. You are responsible for what happens under your account.
You can stop using Opie at any time. To delete the account and its data, use Delete account in your profile. A paid membership is cancelled as part of it. See the Privacy page for exactly what that removes and the one thing it keeps.
Membership and billing
Opie has a free plan and a paid one, Opie+. Paid membership is a subscription, billed monthly or yearly through our payment processor.
- It renews automatically at the end of each period until you cancel.
- Cancelling takes effect at the end of the period you have already paid for, never immediately. You keep everything until then.
- Cancelling and updating your card happen in our payment processor's portal, reached from your profile. We do this so your card details never pass through Opie.
- If a payment fails, you keep your access while it is retried. This is a tool somebody may be standing in a shop holding, and a card problem is not a reason to take it away. We will tell you and ask you to update the card.
- Prices can change, but not without telling members before it affects them.
Founding members were given full access directly and are not billed. There is nothing to cancel on those accounts.
If something goes wrong with a charge, email us. We would rather sort out a refund than argue about it.
What you contribute
You can share a label photo and product details with the shared database, and post in the community. When you do:
- You keep ownership of what you contribute. You give us permission to show it in Opie so it is useful to other members.
- A shared label photo becomes publicly readable. Only share one where the label is the only thing in the frame.
- Contribute honestly. Wrong product information in an app like this can hurt someone.
- Do not post anything unlawful, abusive, or that belongs to somebody else. Do not give other members medical advice or present yourself as their clinician.
We can remove contributions and suspend accounts that break this, which is a judgement we would rather make than leave dangerous information up.
Using the service sensibly
Do not try to break Opie, get at other members' information, or run automated traffic against it. There are rate limits, and they exist because every scan costs real money to process.
Availability
Opie is offered as it is. We do not promise it will always be available or always be right, and it depends on services we do not run. We may change or discontinue features. If we shut something down that you rely on, we will give you notice and a way to get your data out.
Liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, Ryan Beach is not liable for indirect or consequential losses arising from your use of Opie, and our total liability is limited to what you paid us in the twelve months before the claim.
Nothing here limits liability that cannot legally be limited, and nothing here is intended to remove rights you have as a consumer where you live.
Changes to these terms
We will tell members by email before a change that materially affects them takes effect. Carrying on using Opie afterwards means you accept the new version.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Minnesota, without regard to its conflict of law rules. Any dispute goes to the state or federal courts located in Minnesota, and both of us agree to those courts hearing it.
